Cameroon: Anglophone Crisis and Arbitrary Detention of Professor Maurice Kamto

The date of May 20, symbolises the unification of the two federal republics of Cameroon, English and French-speaking Cameroun coming together after the independence to form one unique country. This unification has always been disputed by a part of the English-speaking population in Cameroon, believing that the directions of the referendum of May 20, 1972, that led to this unification were cheated.

May 20, 2019, is in a very conflictual context. Cameroon, already subject to strong social and economic tensions, is plunged into an unprecedented political crisis since the presidential elections of October 7, 2018. Professor Maurice Kamto ranked 2nd at the end of these elections, challenged the results and was arrested and jailed with several of his supporters. 

In these circumstances, several civil society and political actors do not find meaning in this celebration of 20 May 2019 and boycotted it. These are the reasons that led to this contest that we discussed during the press conference that you can see in the video below.
