At a press conference in Yaoundé on Monday, November 25, 2019, Maurice Kamto declared that his political party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, would not take part into the municipal and legislative elections scheduled for February 9, 2020.
The reasons for this decision are: the 3 years long lasting Anglophone Crisis has caused 3,000 dead, 1 million displaced people including more than 50000 refugees in Nigeria, and more than 200 villages partially or fully burned; 3 regions with huge tax losses due to insecurity and the electoral code which does not respect the rights of the participants, in particular the deadline for filing a contestation of the results of the legislative elections that is prior to the proclamation of the results.
Because of the serious violation of human rights in Cameroon, Maurice Kamto is withdrawing his political party from participating in the municipal and legislative elections planned for February 9, 2020. However, he agrees to maintain his participation should the Cameroonian government agree to postpone the elections as to allow for more time to find solutions to the crises and review the electoral code.
The Cameroonian government has so far made no comment on Maurice Kamto statement and the electoral calendar is therefore maintained despite the fact that the social, economic, political and security climate’s getting worse.
